Silica sand is a common abrasive used in sandblasting, also known as abrasive blasting, because of its hardness, angular shape, and availability. Here’s how it’s used and why:

How Silica Sand is Used in Sandblasting

  1. SURFACE PREPARATION:
    • Silica sand is propelled at high speed against a surface using compressed air.
    • This removes rust, paint, scale, or other surface contaminants, leaving the surface clean and roughened for coating or painting.
  2. ETCHING AND ENGRAVING:
    • It’s used to etch glass or stone surfaces by selectively blasting specific areas with a stencil in place.
  3. RESTORATION:
    • Used in building and monument cleaning to remove dirt, grime, and graffiti.

WHY SILICA SAND?

  • Hard and sharp: The sub-angular to angular shape makes it effective at cutting and cleaning.
  • Graded sizes: Consistent particle sizes help control the finish and blasting speed.
  • Cost-effective: Often less expensive than synthetic or specialty abrasives.
